Product Summary

Piston is a mechanical component and a part of hydraulic cylinder. It is a short, cylinder-shaped metal component that separates the two sides of the cylinder barrel internally. The piston is usually machined with grooves to fit elastomeric or metal seals. These seals are often O-rings, U-cups or cast iron rings. They prevent the pressurized hydraulic oil from passing by the piston to the chamber on the opposite side. This difference in pressure between the two sides of the piston causes the cylinder to extend and retract. Piston seals vary in design and material according to the pressure and temperature requirements that the cylinder will see in service. Furthermore, the best seals for high temperature are cast iron piston rings.

Besides, piston is also the part of reciprocating engines, reciprocating pumps, gas compressors and pneumatic cylinders, among other similar mechanisms and the moving component that is contained by a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings. One the one hand, in an engine, the function is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod and/or connecting rod. On the other hand, in a pump, the purpose is reversed and force is transferred from the crankshaft to the piston for the purpose of compressing or ejecting the fluid in the cylinder. In some engines, the piston also acts as a valve by covering and uncovering ports in the cylinder wall.
