Plastic double spur gear is a double spur gear which is made of plastic. A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids used in the manufacture of industrial products. Plastics are typically polymers of high molecular mass, and may contain other substances to improve performance and/or reduce production costs. Monomers of plastic are either natural or synthetic organic compounds. Cost is always a factor in deciding to use a plastic gear. The cost of machining a metal gear is substantially higher than the cost of casting a plastic gear. Also, often the use of a metal gear would be detrimental to the life of an office product. The use of plastic and polymers in light machines mandate a plastic gear be used. Metal gears would tend to grind away the plastic tracks that they operate on.
