Gear shaft coupling is a kind of device which transmits torque between two shafts which are not collinear. It would be an ideal application where the coupling needs to be electrically insulating or axial sliding assembly is needed. It is widely used in various mechanical and hydraulic fields, being frequently seen in screw, servo motors, stepper motors and micro motor and so on. Gear shaft coupling has a flexible joint fixed to each other. And the two joints are connected by a third shaft, called the spindle. The tooth flanks and outer diameter of the external gear are crowned to allow for angular displacement between the two gears. Mechanically, the gears are equivalent to rotating splines with modified profiles. They are called gears because of the relatively large size of the teeth. Gear shaft couplings are generally limited to angular misalignments. Universal joints are capable of higher misalignments. Single joint gear shaft couplings are also used to connected two nominally coaxial shafts. In this application the device is called a gear-type flexible, or flexible coupling.
