Slitting

Slitting, also known as roll slitting or log slitting, both of them are common type of slitting. Generally, slitting is the process of cutting, length-wise, sheets of metal, plastic or fabric, into strips, in which a coil of material is cut down into a number of smaller coils of narrower measure. Slitting is done to standard sizes, as in coils of 2 inch steel strip, commonly used in stamping small parts, such as clips, or custom sizes as required. Slitting services also rewind or recoil strips to specific requirements. Potential workpieces are selectively thin (0.001 to 0.215 in.) and can be machined in sheet or roll form. Slitting is considered a practical alternative to other methods due to its high productivity and the versatility of materials it can manage.

And the difference between of roll slitting or log slitting is that a shearing operation that cuts a large roll of material into narrower rolls. The log slitting terminology refers back to the olden days of saw mills when they would cut logs into smaller sections. They would also use these saw mills to cut iron rods into smaller sections; see slitting mill. The multiple narrower strips of material are known as mults (short for multiple)
