Metal Spinning & Stamping

Metal spinning, also called as spin forming, spinning or spun metal manufacturing, is a metalworking process that forms sheet metal into a cylindrical or circular shape by which a disc or tube of metal is rotated at high speed and formed into an axially symmetric part. The blank sheet metal is rotated about an axis while a form tool is pressed against the part into a chuck shape tool to form a desired shape. Spinning can be performed by hand or by a CNC lathe. Metal spinning typically require low cost tooling when compared with similar processes, such as, drawing and punching manufacturing. Spinning tools are simple and easy to set up. Small production numbers are practical with metal spinning manufacturing. Labor costs tends to be higher, however these cost are easy to justify with low volume manufacturing vs. the high tooling costing of other processes. Material which may be used in spinning manufacturing including: Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Steel-cold rolled, Steel-hot rolled, Inconel and stainless steel.

Stamping is an effective way of producing formed sheet metal parts at an extremely high rate. The metal stamping dies are placed in presses and each cycle of the press produces a formed part.But in the most metalworing, stamping are commonly associated with stamping are blanking, piercing, forming, and drawing. These operations are done with dedicated tooling,which also can be called as hard tooling. This type of tooling is used to make high volume parts of one configuration of part design. All these operations could be a single stage operation where every stroke of the press produce the desired form on the sheet metal part, or could occur through a series of stages. The process is usually carried out on sheet metal, but can also be used on other materials, such as polystyrene.
