Metal injection molding (MIM) is a metalworking process and it is a kind of powder metal process in which fine powder, much smaller in size than the powder used in other metal powder processes, is injected under pressure into the mold. A bonding agent holds the composed metal powder together after release from the mold and a baking process fuses the metal part. Metal injection molded parts are more dense than other powder metal parts and have better finishing characteristics. The molding process allows complex parts to be shaped in a single operation and in high volume. End products are commonly component items used in various industries and applications.

Powder Injection Molding (PIM), which encompasses Metal Injection Molding (MIM) and Ceramic Injection Molding (CIM), is a net-shape process for the manufacturing of high volume high precision components for use in a diverse range of industries. MIM and CIM parts can now be found in all areas of life, from our cars and trucks to watches, dental braces, mobile phones, IT equipment, DIY tools and much more.

The powder injection molding (PIM) process is an efficient method for the high volume production of shaped components from powders. PIM is a derivative of polymer injection molding and uses much of the same technology, along with batch sintering processes used in powder metallurgy and ceramic processing.

PIM is especially competitive in the production of small intricately shaped components. Examples are as diverse as silicon carbide turbochargers and radial rotors for heat engines, alumina thread guides, rare earth magnet pole pieces for hard disk drives, and stainless steel gear wheels for electric tooth brushes
