Pattern molds are made by forming a pattern around a sample of the part to be cast. And the pattern is used to prepare the cavity into which molten material will be poured during the casting process. In the most time, patterns are applied to sand casting, which is made of wood, metal, plastics or other materials. Patterns are made to exacting standards of construction, so that they can last for a reasonable length of time, according to the quality grade of the pattern being built, and so that they will repeatable provide a dimensionally acceptable casting. Under certain circumstances an original item may be adapted to be used as a pattern. This is commonly done with setting sand. The part is removed and molten material is poured into the mold pattern left from the removed part.
