Rotational Mold Making

Rotational molding, also can be referred as rotomolding, rotocasting or spin casting, is a molding process for creating many kinds of mostly hollow items, typically of plastic. Rotational molding is a three-stage, no-pressure, plastic molding process. During the heating stage, the mold slowly rotates in two planes ,which also can be called as bi-axial rotation. Heat transfer causes the plastic charge inside the mold to melt and uniformly coat the interior of the mold. During the second stage, the mold moves to the cooling station,where it is cooled by air and/or water spray. In the final load/unload stage, the part is removed from the mold and a new charge of material is loaded into the mold.

The process has been applied to in the field of plastics since the 1940s, but in the early years was little used because it was a slow process restricted to a small number of plastics. While over the past two decades, improvements in process control and developments with plastic powders have resulted in a significant increase in usage.
