2. Knowledge about stainless steel sheet

1. About stainless steel

In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% to 11% chromium content by mass.

Stainless steels are in general grouped into

● Martensitic stainless steels

Martensitic stainless steels, such as types 403, 410, 410NiMo and 420, are similar in composition to the ferrite group, but contain a balance of C and Ni vs. Cr and Mo; hence, austenite at high temperatures transforms to martensite at low temperatures. Like ferrite, they also have a body-centered cubic crystal structure in the hardened condition. The carbon content of these hardenable steels affects forming and welding. 

● Ferritic stainless steels

Ferritic stainless steel consists of iron-chromium alloys with body-centered cubic crystal structures. They can have good ductility and formability, but high-temperature strengths are relatively poor when compared to austenitic grades. Some ferritic stainlesses (such as types 409 and 405) used, for example, in mufflers, exhaust systems, kitchen counters and sinks, cost less than other stainless steels. 

● Austenitic stainless steels

Austenitic stainless steels are the most weldable of the stainlesses and can be divided rather loosely into three groups: common chromium-nickel (300 series), manganese-chromium-nickel-nitrogen (200 series) and specialty alloys. Austenitic is the most popular stainless steel group and is used for numerous industrial and consumer applications, such as in chemical plants, power plants, food processing and dairy equipment. Austenitic stainless steels have a face-centered cubic structure. 

● Duplex (ferritic-austenitic) stainless steels

Primarily used in chemical plants and piping applications, the duplex stainless steels are developing rapidly today and have a microstructure of approximately equal amounts of ferrite and austenite. Duplex stainless steels typically contain approximately 22-25% chromium and 5% nickel with molybdenum and nitrogen. Although duplex and some austenitics do have similar alloying elements, duplexes have higher yield strength and greater stress corrosion cracking resistance to chloride than austenitic stainless steels. 

● Precipitation-hardening stainless steels

Precipitation-hardening stainless steels are chromium-nickel stainlesses, which contain alloying additions such as aluminum, copper or titanium that allow them to be hardened by a solution and aging heat treatment. They can be either austenitic or martensitic in the aged condition.

Alloying metallic elements added during the making of the steel increase corrosion resistance, hardness, or strength. The metals used most commonly as alloying elements in stainless steel include chromium, nickel, and molybdenum.Stainless steels are available in the form of, plate, sheet, strip, foil, bar, wire, pipes and tubes.

2. About stainless steel sheet

Sheet is a flat-rolled product in coils or cut lengths at least 610 mm wide and less than 4.76 mm thick. A stainless steel sheet is a type of sheet metal made from an alloy of steel and chromium. Though the thickness of a stainless steel sheet can vary, it is generally thicker than metal leaf or foil, but thinner than a metal plate. Most metal sheets can be slightly flexed or bent by hand, which is not possible with a plate.

Stainless steel sheet is produced in nearly all types except the free machining and certain martensitic grades. Sheet from the conventional grades is almost exclusively produced on continuous mills. Hand mill production is usually confined to alloys that cannot be produced economically on continuous mills, such as certain high-temperature alloys.

Sheet produced from slabs on continuous rolling mills is coiled directly off the mill. After they are descaled, these hot bands are cold rolled to the required thickness and coils off the cold mill are either annealed and descaled or bright annealed. Belt grinding to remove surface defects is frequently required at hot bands or at an intermediate stage of processing. Full coils or lengths cut from coils may then be lightly cold rolled on either dull or bright rolls to produce the required finish. Sheet may be shipped in coils, or cut sheets may be produced by shearing lengths from a coil and flattening them by roller leveling or stretcher leveling.

While there are many different types of stainless steel sheet design, most fall into one of three basic categories. Type 306 is the most widely used, and also the most economically priced. Type 316 is a more expensive version of standard stainless steel sheeting, and offers a higher level of strength and corrosion-resistance. Austenitic (chromium-nickel stainless class) stainless steel containing 2%-3% molybdenum (whereas 304 has none). The inclusion of molybdenum gives 316 greater resistance to various forms of deterioration. Type 410 is the most basic, and is generally used to produce cutlery and kitchen ware.The most widely used martensitic (plain chromium stainless class with exceptional strength) stainless steel, featuring the high level of strength conferred by the martensitics. It is a low-cost, heat-treatable grade suitable for non-severe corrosion applications.

4. Applications of stainless steel sheet

Because of relatively attractive appearance of stainless steel sheets, stainless steel sheets are used for both decorative and structural purposes. They can be laid over a wood base to create a countertop or table, and are also a popular finish for kitchen backsplashes. Many appliances and machines are made using a stainless steel sheet casing, as are many cars and airplane bodies. Metalworkers use these sheets to create artwork and architectural elements, while electronics manufacturers rely on stainless steel sheets when building equipment casing and some operating components.
